Amar Ghaas (Kern 788) is a rye grass for Rabi winter fodder — soft, tender and palatable green feed for dairy animals through the coldest months, when most other fodder is either finished or too coarse.

Where it fits

Rye grass is a winter specialist. It keeps growing through the cold when other fodder crops slow down, which is exactly when dairy animals need green feed and milk yield is under pressure.

The crop

  • Season: Rabi winter fodder
  • Sowing window: September–October
  • Cutting: multi-cut — sown once, cut repeatedly through the winter and into spring
  • Texture: soft and tender rather than coarse, so animals eat it readily without leaving stalk behind
  • Cold: suited to Punjab, Haryana and Himachal winters
  • Pack size: 500 gm

Getting the most from it

As with all multi-cut winter fodder, the routine after each cut decides the next one — irrigate soon after cutting and top-dress nitrogen, and do not cut so low that you damage the growing crowns.

Rye grass is commonly grown alongside berseem. The two complement each other well in a dairy ration, and sowing them together is standard practice across the Punjab and Haryana dairy belt.
