• Temperature: cool-season, 55°F to 65°F, frost-intolerant, germination 40°F to 75°F, flowering and pod development 60°F to 70°F
• Climate: temperate, tropical, subtropical, mild weather preferred; moderate rainfall tolerated
• Irrigation: regular and adequate, 7 to 10 days in vegetative phase, 4 to 5 days in flowering and pod filling phase, avoid moisture stress at germination, flowering, and pod setting, use drip irrigation
• Weed control: manual or herbicides, twice during crop cycle, first at 20 to 25 days after sowing, second at 40 to 45 days after sowing, use pendimethalin or trifluralin as pre-emergence sprays
• Sunlight: full sun, 6 hours minimum
• Storage: fresh, frozen, canned, or dried. Fresh peas cooled quickly and stored at 32°F to 40°F and 90% to 95% humidity for up to two weeks. Frozen peas blanched before freezing and stored at -18°C or below for up to one year. Canned peas are processed and stored in a cool and dry place for up to two years. Dried peas are cleaned, sorted, graded, dried, and stored in airtight containers in a cool and dry place for up to one year.

How to sow

  • Seed rate: 20–25 kg per acre
  • Spacing: 30 cm between rows, 10 cm between plants

  • Palewa: pre-sowing irrigation, especially important in post-paddy fields. Sow at vaapsa — workable moisture, not wet
  • FYM: 6–8 tonnes per acre worked in at final ploughing. For pencil-pea quality this genuinely matters
  • Soil pH: 6.0–7.5

This seed needs treating before sowing, and all three layers are worth doing: a fungicide, a biological booster, and a Rhizobium inoculation. Most farmers skip the Rhizobium, which is a mistake — nitrogen fixation typically adds 8–10% to yield for a very small cost. Ask your dealer for the bundle.

The irrigation that decides your crop

Pre-flowering irrigation at day 25–30 — light, never flooded. Skip it and yield drops sharply. A second irrigation goes in around pod fill if the soil is dry.

  • Weeds in the first 25 days cost you yield directly. Weed by hand in the day 15–20 window if you have not used a pre-emergent

Aphids appear after day 20 — spray only if you cross the threshold of about five aphids per plant, not before. Powdery mildew watch begins around day 35–40, and matters most in humid belts like East UP and Bihar.
