Mustang (Kern 505) is an F1 forage maize bred for one job: the maximum bulk of tender, juicy green fodder in the shortest time, from a single cutting.
Please read this before you buy
Kern 505 is maize. It gives one strong cutting at around 60–70 days. It is not a napier-type grass that you cut again and again over several years. If you want repeat cutting over multiple seasons, this is not the right crop for you and your dealer will tell you so.
Harvest
- Green chop (main use): 60–75 days after sowing, at milk stage
- Crop height: around 8–11 feet of strong green fodder
- Dry matter at green chop: 17–22%, protein around 8.5–10%
- Stem: juicy and soft — animals eat it fully and leave little behind
Sowing calendar
- Punjab & Haryana: Kharif 20 June – end July; Spring 15 January – 15 February (the spring crop fills the May–June fodder gap)
- Western UP: late June – July, and mid-February
- Himachal (lower hills): April – June
- Rajasthan: with monsoon onset; spring sowing only where irrigation is assured
Rule of thumb: avoid the hard cold of December–January. Once temperature is above 10°C and water is arranged, Kern 505 can be sown.
How to sow
- Seed rate: around 20 kg per acre — sown dense, for maximum green fodder
- Spacing: 30 cm between lines, 8–10 cm between plants
- Basal: FYM 4–6 tonnes per acre, full P and K, one-third N, plus zinc sulphate 10 kg per acre
- Top-dressing: one-third N at knee height (25–30 days), one-third again just before tasseling (45–50 days)
- Pack size: 5 kg
Two things that decide your yield
- Moisture at tasseling (45–50 days) is critical. Stress at this stage costs you the crop's bulk
- Zinc matters in sandy loam. Zinc deficiency is common across Punjab and Haryana and directly reduces biomass
Where it will not do well
Maize does not tolerate waterlogging. If your plot holds standing water for more than two days, or has a sem problem, Kern 505 is not suitable — sow on ridges where drainage is weak. In arid belts without assured irrigation, this crop cannot be recommended.
If you want to make silage
Harvest later, at 85–100 days, when the kernel shows a half to three-quarter milk line and dry matter reaches 30–35%. Chop to 1–2.5 cm with 90%+ grain crush, pack airtight, and leave at least 45 days. Good silage smells slightly sour and is light greenish-brown.
