Character

Gur Para Sugar Beet is a high-yield fodder beet that offers an energy-rich feed for livestock. Its high protein content enhances milk production, making it a popular choice among farmers. The crop thrives in various soil types, provided they are well-drained, and it has excellent drought tolerance. The roots, rich in carbohydrates and protein, contribute to improved animal nutrition and health.

Agronomy

Gur Para is best suited for cool climates where roots develop optimally, with improved color and sugar content. The beet requires well-prepared soil and a steady supply of nutrients, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, for maximum yield. Proper irrigation, weed management, and nutrient application during the growing period ensure robust growth and high yields. Recommended sowing period is between October and November, with a seed rate of 2-2.5 kg per hectare.

Gur Para (Kern 878) is a hybrid forage beet — India's first — built on German genetics that have been standard winter feed on dairy farms in New Zealand, the UK and Ireland for over 20 years.

Why forage beet

From November to February, berseem isn't ready, maize silage is finished and straw carries little nutrition. Gur Para is sown once and harvested once to fill exactly that winter gap — roots for energy, leaves for protein.

Field performance

  • Crop cycle: 3–4 months — sow in October, harvest January to March
  • Yield potential: 60–80 tonnes of fresh fodder per acre with proper irrigation and management
  • Energy: approximately 3 Mcal ME/kg DM — close to 90% of grain energy, from highly soluble carbohydrate
  • Salinity: tolerates up to 7 dS/m, so it can be grown on marginal land where wheat and berseem struggle
  • Feed utilisation: 90–95%, so very little is wasted

How to sow

  • Seed rate: about 50,000 seeds per acre — 1.5 kg, i.e. 30 packs
  • Row spacing: 45–50 cm
  • Sowing depth: 1–2 cm
  • Irrigation: good crops are possible on less water, but 3–4 irrigations are necessary
  • Pack size: 50 gm

Feeding

Feed chopped and mixed with straw or dry fodder — beet is a high-energy, high-moisture feed and needs fibre alongside it. Both root and leaf are usable: the root supplies energy, the leaf supplies protein. The crop can also be ensiled for year-round use.

European dairy studies report the potential for higher milk fat and protein where feed beet is part of the ration. Results vary with animal, ration and management.
