First Harvest: 50–55 days after sowing

Cuts: 3–5 harvests possible

Irrigation: Requires moderate water

Fertilizer: Balanced NPK recommended for best growth

Dhanisha (Kern 496) is a multi-cut forage oat for the Rabi season — green fodder for dairy animals from a single sowing, cut two to three times between December and March.

Cutting schedule and yield

  • First cut: 50–55 days after sowing, at boot stage to early flowering
  • Second cut: 95–105 days — 50–65 quintal per acre
  • Third cut: 135–150 days — 30–45 quintal per acre, taken at ground level as no further regrowth is expected
  • Season total: 140–200 quintal of green fodder per acre in well-managed plains. Hills, arid belts and late sowing give less. This is a range, not a guarantee

Boot stage check: the panicle is still inside the sheath. Cutting then gives the best combination of quality and regrowth.

Sowing window

  • Plains: 20 October – 10 November
  • Western UP: 20 October – 15 November
  • Hills (HP, Jammu): 25 September – 25 October
  • Arid Rajasthan: 25 October – 15 November

Do not sow before 15 October in the plains — residual heat makes germination patchy. After 15 November, tillering drops and you will get one or two cuts rather than three. February sowing is not recommended; heat stress cuts the yield.

How to sow

  • Seed rate: 35–40 kg per acre by line sowing, 40–45 kg broadcast. On sandy or light soil raise it to 40–45 kg and add extra FYM
  • With berseem: 25–30 kg Kern 496 plus 8–10 kg berseem per acre
  • Spacing: rows 20–25 cm. (30 cm is for grain oats, not fodder)
  • Depth: 4–5 cm. Beyond 6 cm germination turns patchy
  • Palewa: pre-sowing irrigation 7–10 days before, to about 60–70% field capacity. This alone accounts for roughly a third of your germination
  • Seed treatment: treat the seed 24 hours before sowing for fungal protection — this prevents most smut and leaf blight. Do not skip it
  • Pack size: 4 kg

The irrigation that matters most

Crown Root Initiation irrigation at 20–25 days after sowing. Miss this one and you can lose 30–40% of your season's yield. Across the season plan for 3–5 irrigations in total, and always water within 3–5 days of a cut, together with the urea top-dress — that is the fuel for regrowth.

Nutrition

  • Basal: DAP 50 kg, urea 25–30 kg, MOP 12–15 kg per acre where potash is deficient
  • After first cut: urea 40–45 kg  |  After second cut: urea 25–30 kg
  • FYM: 3–4 tonnes per acre at last ploughing
  • Zinc: if soil test shows below 0.6 ppm, apply zinc sulphate 10 kg per acre as basal. Deficiency is common in the plains
  • Total nitrogen roughly 50–60 kg per acre, always split — never in one dose

Cut it right

Stubble height 7–8 cm (about 3 inches). This is the single biggest rule for multi-cut. Cut lower and the crop is finished.

What this fodder is, and is not

Kern 496 is an energy fodder — crude protein 8–12%, TDN 55–60%. It is not a protein fodder. For protein, pair it with berseem or rijka. Feeding both together is what balances the ration.

It suits cows, buffaloes, goats and horses. Goats take to it particularly well.

Please note: this is fodder oats, not the grain oats used for human breakfast oats. Those are a different variety altogether.

Silage

Oats is among the better cereal forages for silage. Cut at boot stage, chop at the right moisture, and pack into a pit or bag. Good silage keeps 6–9 months.

A note on wild oat

Wild oat (jangli jai) is a different species from cultivated oat and is the main weed concern. Hand-weed in the first 30 days. Never spray a grass herbicide on this crop — Kern 496 is itself a grass and will be killed.

Please remember the product code KERN-496 when ordering. Confirm doses and any sprays with your Kern dealer or state agriculture advisory.
